Start with the Surface Browser’s IsEditable check using AssetDatabase.IsOpenForEdit, and inspect how it handles packages that are not embedded or local. Then trace the listed asset-writing editors, windows, tools, and scene handles, including materials, Chisel settings, hotspot layouts, paint profiles, project settings, and generator defaults. Done means locked or read-only package assets remain unchanged, show read-only values, and explain why they cannot be changed.

Assets that are locked or not checked out in version control, or in read-only packages, can't be changed. Go through every editor, window, tool and scene handle that writes to an asset (materials and their Chisel settings, hotspot layouts, paint profiles, project settings, generators' defaults, ...) and make sure it:

  • doesn't change a locked asset;
  • shows its values read-only, so it doesn't look as if they can be changed;
  • says why it can't be changed.

The Surface Browser already does this for materials (IsEditable: AssetDatabase.IsOpenForEdit, and packages that aren't embedded or local).
