This is a 1.0 UX epic spanning the whole editor: generators, snapping, shortcuts, inspectors, hierarchy, menus and onboarding. It explicitly asks for the work to be split into sub-issues (#47, #42, #16, #7, #10, #12 are referenced), so a newcomer should pick one of those linked issues rather than this one. To understand the codebase, start by exploring the editor tooling and UI code, then watch how sub-issues get carved out.

Description

enhancement UX

Until now the focus has been on the underlying technology, and UX was skipped on purpose. Before 1.0, using Chisel should feel finished and consistent.

Areas to go over:

  • Creating shapes: every generator in the create tool (#47), how drawing a shape starts, sizes and ends, and what happens to the selection afterwards
  • Editing: generator and brush editing handles, what each tool shows, and moving between tools
  • Snapping: snapping to other geometry (#42), bounds snapping (#16), and making clear what is being snapped to
  • Keyboard shortcuts (#7), and shortcuts that are consistent across tools
  • Inspectors: layout, naming and tooltips consistent across models, generators, composites, brushes and decals
  • Overlays and toolbars: which ones show by default, what belongs in each, and their names
  • Messages: clear warnings and errors in the inspector and hierarchy, none that aren't needed (#10), and invalid brushes that stay visible and editable (#12)
  • Hierarchy: icons and decorations for models, generators, composites and decals
  • Menus: GameObject > Chisel, Add Component > Chisel and the context menus complete and consistently named
  • Getting started: what a new user sees in an empty scene, and the sample scene

Split concrete work out into issues of their own as it's found, and link them here.

Related: selection snapping (#99), decal UX (#165), polygon decal UX (#183).
