Direção de pesquisa

Start with the docstrings for pvlib.irradiance._calc_delta, _calc_zeta, pvlib.irradiance.perez, and pvlib.irradiance.perez_driesse; the issue links to the _calc_delta location in pvlib/irradiance.py. Review the discussion and linked PR #2808 to understand the behavior divergence and the unresolved question of aligning calculations. Done means clarifying the documented behavior and intended parameter calculations, but the issue does not settle whether implementation changes are needed.

Descrição

The docstring for pvlib.irradiance._calc_delta currently states:

Compute the delta parameter, which represents sky dome "brightness" in the Perez and Perez-Driesse models.

This is somewhat misleading, because this function is not currently used In the pvlib.irradiance.perez function. Perhaps it should be? If not, then I suggest updating the language. (_calc_zeta's docstring notably only mentions Perez-Driesse.)

In addition, after a helpful communication with @adriesse, it seems that the inaugural pvlib.irradiance.perez function does not indicate in its doctoring that kastenyoung1989 is (apparently) the preferred method for computing the airmass parameter.

Was there ever a discussion about aligning the airmass input, its (default) calculation, and the delta calculation between pvlib.irradiance.perez and pvlib.irradiance.perez_driesse?

(Same question could be made for zeta and _calc_zeta usage, I suppose.)

I have been somewhat frustrated by the divergence in behavior of perez and perez-driesse, with the latter seeming to have better safeguards in place. This was much of the impetus behind https://github.com/pvlib/pvlib-python/pull/2808.
