Rechercherichtung

Start by tracing how the desktop app starts and how its current release and installation process works; the issue does not name specific files or tests. Compare the existing app structure with the requested update flow, then identify where update checks, background downloads, notifications, and restart behavior fit. Done means the acceptance criteria work, including VPN disconnect confirmation and recovery after an update failure.

Description

User story

As a Defguard Desktop user,
I want to be told when a new version is available and install it with one click,
so that I always have the latest features and security fixes without updating manually.

Flow

  1. The app checks for updates when it starts and then periodically (e.g. every hour).
  2. If a new version is found, it downloads silently in the background. The user isn't prompted yet.
  3. When the download is ready, a non-blocking toast appears: "Update available: Defguard 2.2 is ready to install." It has two buttons, Update and Dismiss, plus a "Release notes" link.
  4. Update restarts the app and applies the update. After the restart, the What's New screen appears.
  5. Dismiss hides the toast. The update is installed automatically the next time the app starts.

Acceptance Criteria

  • The toast stays visible until the user acts on it and never blocks the UI.
  • If a VPN connection is active, clicking Update first asks the user to confirm that it will be disconnected.
  • If the update fails, the error is logged, the current version keeps working, and the next check tries again.
