What is failing

During a rolling update, while two platform generations of memex-portal-deployment serve concurrently (the 30-minute drain window), silos of one generation drop inbound cluster-manifest requests sent by the hosted-client gateway of the other generation: the message body's field header names a compound type alias (inv, parameterized over GrainReference / IClusterManifestSystemTarget) that the receiving generation's serializer configuration cannot resolve, so Connection.ProcessIncoming fails the read and the request never executes.

Probable cause — platform-generation skew between the two ReplicaSets (medium-high confidence).

The sending generation's serializer registers a generated invocation type under that alias; the receiving generation does not, so the two builds' Orleans serialization metadata are mutually unintelligible. Supporting evidence: every failure in the burst has the same shape — one gateway source (sys.client/hosted-*) sending Requests to sys.svc.manifest, every receiving pod failing identically, with only two type hashes varying; and the window coincides exactly with two ReplicaSets serving at once. This is the generation-overlap window that Rolling-Update Build Tolerance documents ("the window in which every cross-generation mismatch happens") — a new symptom of it: that work and issue #4071 covered the build/compile side; this is the Orleans messaging side.

Impact

Cluster-manifest distribution from that gateway to all other silos fails for the length of the overlap and presumably self-heals when the old generation finishes draining. Because the overlap recurs on every roll, this is a standing intermittent failure of a primary cluster mechanism during rollouts. Not confirmed user-visible from this evidence alone — if it is confined to internal manifest chatter it is closer to sev:M; a client gateway that cannot exchange manifest requests with any silo normally cannot route grain calls for the window either, so I have ruled it sev:H and a human should re-rule after checking user traffic through the affected gateway during the overlap.

Where to look

  • Orleans.Serialization.TypeSystem.TypeConverter.ResolveCompoundAliasType — the throw site; what is missing is the alias registration behind it, not the throw.
  • The per-generation serializer configuration / generated-invocation metadata: compare the two ReplicaSets' framework identities and Orleans versions first (per the operator note in Rolling-Update Build Tolerance, a cross-generation mismatch during a roll is a generation overlap, not a source problem).
  • Whether the client/manifest connection is supposed to be generation-scoped, so a gateway never sends to silos of a foreign generation during the drain.

Not a duplicate: the other TypeLoadException incidents in this partition are different log sites and symptoms (McpServer, LayoutAreaHost, CircuitHost).
