Research direction

Read src/MeshWeaver.Messaging.Hub/Localization/strings.en.json and strings.de.json at the setup.ai.embedding.help key, then inspect deploy/homebrew/bin/memex-local around line 2176. Update the three messages to clarify that without embeddings search does not search page content; check FirstRunSetup.md around line 188 for whether its SQLite wording needs correction. Done when the English, German, and CLI wording is accurate and any needed guide correction is made.

Description

area:search documentation

Repository and prior art

  • The text is in src/MeshWeaver.Messaging.Hub/Localization/strings.en.json and strings.de.json (key setup.ai.embedding.help), and in deploy/homebrew/bin/memex-local line 2176 (main at 0cf73dd82). All are in MeshWeaver core.
  • I searched issues in Systemorph/MeshWeaver for "embeddings wizard search words meaning" and "setup.ai.embedding.help". I found no existing issue.

Current wording

  • Setup wizard (en): "Without one, search falls back to matching words instead of meaning — silently, so it is worth setting now."
  • Setup wizard (de): "Ohne ihn sucht das Portal nach Wörtern statt nach Bedeutung — und zwar unbemerkt …"
  • memex-local setup: "so search matches MEANING rather than words. Left blank it degrades silently."

What actually happens (PostgreSQL, no embeddings, no chunk store)

Measured on a fresh local install (portal 3.0.0-ci.9869), 2026-10-03:

  1. A Markdown node sglauser/LocalTest named "Local test page", content "Persistence check zebrafinch 2026-10-03".
  2. search "namespace:sglauser Local test page" → 1 hit.
  3. search "zebrafinch partitions:all" and search "namespace:sglauser zebrafinch" → 0 hits.
  4. search_chunks → "searched": false, "Content chunk indexing is not enabled in this host — no chunk store is configured."

PostgreSqlSqlGenerator.GenerateTextSearchClause (MeshWeaver.Plugins) matches each term as an ILIKE substring of name, path, description and node_type only. The words in a node's content are not searched without embeddings.

Requested

Change the three texts so that they state what is searched without embeddings, for example: "Without one, search matches only names, paths and descriptions — not the text inside pages — and it does so silently, so it is worth setting now." Update the German string to the same meaning.

FirstRunSetup.md line 188 ("search degrades from meaning to words") describes SQLite; check whether it needs the same correction.
