Find a kind guru Starting out, you need more help than documentation can give. A kind, experienced developer nearby can show you where to begin and open the door to open source.
Respect their time A guru who answers you is giving you their time. Thank them, credit their help, and never take a reply for granted.
Reach out the way they chose Open their GitHub profile and use the contact details they published there; if there are none, a thoughtful issue or discussion on their project is the right door. One person at a time: no mass messages, no recruiting.
Come prepared Read the project's README and CONTRIBUTING guide, try things yourself first, and ask one specific question. Good questions get good answers.

Where does this data come from?: From public GitHub profiles: the name, avatar, bio, location and most-starred repositories each person chose to publish there. It is re-read about once a week, and a location is placed on a city by its text alone, so it may be inaccurate or out of date. Treat it as a reference, and check the person's GitHub profile for the latest.
My location is wrong or missing. How do I fix it?: Edit the location field in your GitHub profile settings. The next weekly sync picks it up; a city and a country (for example “Shanghai, China”) place you best.
How do I remove myself?: Sign in and use the removal page; it takes effect at once, and we will not add you again. You can also delete the location from your GitHub profile, or email [email protected].
