Research direction

Start by tracing how Subtitle Edit 5 handles Ctrl+V after focus returns from another application, then compare that behavior with Subtitle Edit 4's replacement of selected subtitle lines. Reproduce the workflow by selecting lines, copying translated text in another app, returning to Subtitle Edit, and pressing Ctrl+V; done means the selected lines are replaced without selecting them again.

Description

Hi Nikolaj,

I wanted to follow up on the Ctrl+V issue I reported, as I noticed that Subtitle Edit 5.3.0 has now been released.

I was wondering whether you concluded that it would not be possible to make Ctrl+V work in SE5 as it does in SE4 when replacing selected subtitle lines after switching to another application.

As I explained before, I am not asking for a new feature or a different way of working. I simply want to be able to continue using the same workflow that has always worked reliably for me in SE4: select the subtitle lines, copy them, switch to another application to translate the text, copy the translation, return to Subtitle Edit and press Ctrl+V to replace the selected lines, without having to select them again.

In SE5, the lines remain highlighted, but Ctrl+V does not replace them as expected until I select them again. This adds an unnecessary step to a workflow I use constantly.

I understand that you have many other things to work on, and I appreciate all the improvements you have made to Subtitle Edit. I just wanted to know whether this behaviour is something that cannot be corrected, or whether there might still be a possibility of making it work as it does in SE4.

I believe this would be a valuable improvement to SE5, particularly for users who regularly translate subtitles using another application.

Thank you for your time and for all your work on Subtitle Edit.

Best regards,
Maria
