enhancement good first issue

Describe the solution you'd like
ign_subcmd_execute returns a status based on the success of subcommand execution. We do not check this return, but we should for safety.

Check this return, and fail-fast if it is not IGN_OK.

Not marked as a bug as this path has not been reached in testing.
