Start by reproducing the two bplapply() benchmarks with MulticoreParam and compare timings before and after loading mgcv. The issue names no files or tests, so trace the bplapply()/MulticoreParam execution path to identify where package loading affects the slowdown. Done should include a verified explanation and a regression check for the reported timing difference.
