Research direction

Start with the saved research-2026-10-11-* orchestrator handoffs and the runtime inventory they describe. The first child task is to measure how often the relevant VSAM class appears and in which constructs; done means reporting that reach measurement before the design note and implementation slices begin.

Written by the indexing model from the issue text.

Description

enhancement epic legacy-modernization needs:crucible needs:docker priority: high scope:frontier

Gap: VSAM beyond KSDS-style indexed access: alternate indexes (AIX, PATH, duplicate alternate keys -- excluded today), ESDS and RRDS (RBA / RRN access is a Hole), and related file status semantics. Common in real estates; the det runtime models KSDS-like files only (F1 ASSUMED).

Wanted: alternate-index and ESDS/RRDS models in the det runtime and the oracle, with IBM's documented ordering (duplicates, key order in EBCDIC -- see #4876's key-order lesson) and file status codes.

Related: #4804 (CardDemo RECORD KEY), #4876 (EBCDIC key order, merged).

Research basis: 2026-10-11 gap research (runtime inventory, language coverage, issue landscape), saved in the orchestrator handoffs (research-2026-10-11-*). Measure-first: the first child issue of this epic is a reach measurement (how often the class appears and in which constructs), then a design note, then slices that each make programs translate or prove. IBM is the reference, GnuCOBOL / our models the instrument; what IBM leaves open is ASSUMED or REFUSED by name (register).
