Research direction

The bug is triggered when starting a Voice session from the normal Chat tab, so first locate the code that handles voice session initialization and session mode routing in the desktop app. Fix the logic so the new voice session inherits the current Chat mode instead of defaulting to Work/Codex, preserving the selected model and chat context. Verify the fix by reproducing the reported steps: Voice sessions started from Chat should remain in Chat mode, retain personal context, and use the correct speech recognition language.

Description

app bug
What version of the Codex App are you using (From “About Codex” dialog)?

26.930.51102

What subscription do you have?

ChatGPT Plus

What platform is your computer?

Darwin 27.0.0 arm64 arm

What issue are you seeing?

I’m using the ChatGPT desktop app on macOS with a personal ChatGPT Plus account.

When I am in the normal Chat tab and start a Voice conversation, the app automatically switches the session into Work with ChatGPT / Codex.

This happens even though I did not select Work manually.

The behavior is reproducible.

What steps can reproduce the bug?
  1. Open the ChatGPT desktop app.
  2. Stay in the normal Chat tab.
  3. Select GPT-5.6 Sol / Instant.
  4. Press the blue Voice button.
  5. The Voice session opens.
  6. The session automatically changes into Work with ChatGPT.
  7. The model/session behavior changes to a Work/Codex session. In some tests it selected GPT-6 Astra Low automatically.
  • The Voice session does not behave like the normal Chat session.
  • Personal Chat context/memory is not used consistently.
  • In one test I asked “What is your name?” and it replied that its name was Codex, while normal Chat correctly remembers the assistant name I use.
  • Hungarian speech recognition has also behaved incorrectly and sometimes switched to another language, including Spanish.
  • The Work model configuration does not reliably prevent the session from switching into Work/Codex.
  • The UI also shows the Codex-style application icon during this behavior, while the normal ChatGPT application uses the standard ChatGPT icon.
What is the expected behavior?

Starting Voice from the normal Chat tab should keep the conversation in normal Chat mode.

Voice should not automatically switch into Work with ChatGPT / Codex unless I explicitly select Work.

The Voice session should preserve the same Chat context and routing as the normal Chat session.

Additional information

Actual behavior

Starting Voice from normal Chat automatically routes the session into Work/Codex.

Troubleshooting already attempted

  • quit and reopened the desktop app
  • reinstalled/replaced the ChatGPT desktop app
  • set the Work model explicitly to GPT-5.6 Sol
  • selected GPT-5.6 Sol manually before starting Voice
  • disabled Limit IP Address Tracking
  • confirmed iCloud Private Relay is Off
  • I am not using a VPN

The issue still occurs.
