Research direction

The raw keys come from aria_labels.app_sidebar.* calls in apps/web/core/components/workspace/sidebar/sidebar-menu-items.tsx and projects-list.tsx; the strings that exist are under aria_labels.projects_sidebar in packages/i18n/src/locales/en/accessibility.json. Done when the toggles' aria-labels resolve to real text and the console check in the issue returns no aria_labels. values. A linked pull request (#10005) already exists, so check it before starting.

Current behavior

The workspace sidebar's toggle buttons get their aria-label from translation keys under aria_labels.app_sidebar, but no locale file defines that namespace: packages/i18n/src/locales/en/accessibility.json has aria_labels.projects_sidebar (which holds open_extended_sidebar and close_extended_sidebar), auth_forms, breadcrumb, common and color_picker. i18next falls back to the key, so the key is the button's accessible name.

Measured on self-hosted Community v1.4.2, signed in, on a project's Work items page (Chromium, 1600x1000): six elements carry a raw key as their aria-label, four with aria_labels.app_sidebar.close_workspace_menu and two with aria_labels.app_sidebar.open_extended_sidebar. The browser's accessibility tree names the buttons with the keys:

- button "aria_labels.app_sidebar.close_workspace_menu" [expanded]: Workspace
- button "aria_labels.app_sidebar.open_extended_sidebar": More

The first is the sidebar's "Workspace" section toggle (and its chevron button), the second the "More" toggle (id="extended-sidebar-toggle").

Source:

  • v1.4.2 (5f7d927): apps/web/core/components/workspace/sidebar/sidebar-menu-items.tsx lines 114-115 and 128-129 (app_sidebar.close_workspace_menu / open_workspace_menu) and 168-169 (app_sidebar.close_extended_sidebar / open_extended_sidebar); projects-list.tsx lines 261-262 (app_sidebar.*_extended_sidebar).
  • preview (bab49bb97): apps/web/components/workspace/sidebar/sidebar-menu-items.tsx lines 127-129 still use aria_labels.app_sidebar.close_extended_sidebar / open_extended_sidebar; the locale is unchanged in that respect.

Expected: either the keys move to aria_labels.projects_sidebar.* (which already has the extended-sidebar strings), or aria_labels.app_sidebar is added to the locales.

Steps to reproduce
  1. Self-hosted Community v1.4.2: sign in and open any project's Work items.
  2. In the browser console:
    [...document.querySelectorAll('[aria-label]')].map(e => e.getAttribute('aria-label')).filter(v => v.startsWith('aria_labels.'))
  3. It lists aria_labels.app_sidebar.close_workspace_menu and aria_labels.app_sidebar.open_extended_sidebar; a screen reader announces those strings for the "Workspace" and "More" buttons.
