Research direction

Find 05-agentic-workflows-intro.md and read Activity 1 (lines 53–58) and its existing self-check. Add an annotated inline .lock.yml sample as a fallback while preserving the option to open a repo workflow and the hands-on prediction check. Done when learners without an existing workflow can complete the activity, and the quantitative scores and learning KPI stay flat or improve.

Description

feedback simulation workshop

Problem statement

05-agentic-workflows-intro.md has the second-highest dropout among main steps (19.8% conditional dropout among 36,883 at-risk runs), with 5,106 failures categorized as agentic-concept-gap. Its "Activity 1 — identify the parts" (lines 53-58) instructs: "Open any .lock.yml file in your repo and find the on: key," but at this point in the curriculum no learner has created a workflow file yet — the first .lock.yml isn't authored until Step 7. The activity cannot be completed as written by a learner without a prior repo full of example workflows, which is consistent with this page's lowest-in-corpus active_learning score (2.4/10).

Proposed change

Add a fallback inline sample .lock.yml snippet (a short, annotated excerpt showing the on: key compiled from a frontmatter trigger) directly in Activity 1, so learners without an existing workflow file can still complete the hands-on artifact-identification exercise. Keep the "Open any .lock.yml file in your repo" instruction for learners who do have one, but no longer make it the only path to completing the activity.

Failure mode classification: Learning barrier

Quantitative guardrail

Current scores for 05-agentic-workflows-intro.md: overall_score 5.43/10, active_learning 2.4, checkpoint_quality 0.0, scaffolding 5.0 → learning KPI index = (2.0×2.4 + 2.0×0.0 + 1.5×5.0) / 5.5 = 2.09/10 (second-lowest in the corpus). Adding a genuine hands-on fallback artifact directly targets the active_learning dimension's weakest scoring driver (an activity that cannot be completed as written) without reducing the conceptual difficulty of the lesson, so overall_score and the learning KPI index should both rise.

Acceptance criteria

  • The shared curriculum quantitative assessment overall_score for 05-agentic-workflows-intro.md stays flat or improves after the change
  • The step's learning KPI index (2.0 × active_learning + 2.0 × checkpoint_quality + 1.5 × scaffolding) / 5.5 stays flat or improves, specifically via a higher active_learning score
  • Activity 1 remains hands-on (not converted to a passive read-and-reveal) and the existing "check your prediction" self-check is preserved
  • A learner with zero prior workflow files in their repo can complete Activity 1 end-to-end using only the content on this page
