Research direction

Start by reproducing the difference between launching a pinned dock app and launching the same app from search or the applications menu, checking GPU selection with nvidia-smi. Trace the dock's pinned-app launch path and its "Open with Intel graphics" behavior. Done means pinned apps default to Intel graphics, with any discrete-GPU selection behavior matching the agreed scope.

Description

What Happened?

When you launch a pinned app, it defaults to NVIDIA graphics (confirmed by checking nvidia-smi). When you launch an app from the search or the applications menu, it runs on Intel graphics. This is not great for battery life.

Steps to Reproduce

Launch an app from the dock. You'll notice by right-clicking the icon that it says "Open with Intel graphics", implying that

Expected Behavior

Apps launch with Intel graphics by default unless the user otherwise requests. Ideally, the user could also make an app (e.g. Kdenlive) always launch with dedicated graphics, e.g. by adding a checkbox beneath "Open with [brand] Graphics" saying "Use discrete graphics card", which will always launch the app with the dGPU.
