Research direction

Start by reading the research procedures in R03/R05, the tools README convention, and the catalog entries and RESEARCH/reject-log.md; verify each candidate's licence at its source. Add each listed source as an entry or record the rejection reason, keeping uncertain commercial terms at needs-review. Done when every candidate is accounted for and the video category has at least 20 entries; add the requested docs/ note about public domain status across jurisdictions.

Description

help wanted new-source priority: medium

Why it matters
Video is the only category under 15 entries (13, and 6 of them needs-review), audio has one entry each for impacts, jingles, stingers and loops, and several sources a game developer would expect in a "free, commercially usable" catalog are absent. These are the gaps a new visitor will notice first.

Evidence
Grep of ids, names, URLs and publishers on 2026-10-21 found no entry for:

  • Public-domain / open-access imagery and references: Wikimedia Commons, Openverse, Europeana, The Met Open Access, Rijksmuseum, Library of Congress free-to-use sets, Unsplash (licence caveats), OpenMoji / Twemoji / Noto Emoji.
  • Audio: BBC Sound Effects archive (RemArc licence, worth a careful read), Mutopia (public-domain scores), MuseScore, Ardour, Surge XT / Vital synths.
  • 2D/animation tools: DragonBones, Rive (free tier), Spriter, Laigter (normal maps), Crocotile / Sprytile, Asset Forge / SpriteStack, Cascadeur (free tier), FreeMoCap.
  • 3D: ArmorPaint, Substance 3D free materials (Adobe licence), Open Pixel Project, Freedoom.
  • Engines/runtimes and level tools listed only inside bodies, not as entries: GDevelop, Defold, TIC-80, Ren'Py, Ultimate Doom Builder / SLADE, Unity Asset Store free section, Synty free packs, TexturePacker / ShoeBox, Book of Shaders.
Present and fine: Kenney, OGA, Quaternius, Poly Haven, ambientCG, Freesound, Sonniss, Google Fonts, Mixamo, Sketchfab, NASA, Smithsonian, Blender demo files, Fab free, LDtk, Tiled, Krita, GIMP, Audacity, LMMS, Material Maker, Blockbench, MagicaVoxel, TrenchBroom, Lospec and others.

Suggested approach
Treat this as a research pass like R03/R05: one entry per source, licence read at the source, needs-review until the commercial stance is clear. Several are tools whose outputs are the developer's own (ArmorPaint, DragonBones), which the tools README convention already covers. The open-access museum sets deserve a short docs/ note on "public domain in the US vs. elsewhere" since that trips people up.

Done when
Each listed source is either an entry or a line in RESEARCH/reject-log.md with the reason, and video has at least 20 entries.
