Research direction

Start with the code-signing policy linked in the issue and the repository's GitHub Actions workflow, which builds each release file. The issue says signing is waiting on SignPath approval; confirm that approval and the signing process before making changes. Done means releases are code-signed and the installation warnings described here no longer apply.

Description

bug build

Pinned. If Windows, Microsoft Defender or an antivirus app stops you from installing Filee, this is why and what to do. This issue stays open until releases are code-signed.

Why it happens

Filee's installer isn't code-signed yet. I've applied for SignPath's free code signing for open-source projects and am waiting for approval. Until then, Windows and some antivirus apps treat Filee as a program from an unknown publisher and may block it, even though nothing is wrong with it.

What to do

Blue "Windows protected your PC" window (SmartScreen)
Click More info, then Run anyway.

Microsoft Defender or another antivirus removed or quarantined the file
That's a false positive. Please comment below with the name of the app and of the detection (a screenshot is best), and I'll report it to the vendor.

The installer won't run at all
Use the portable version, which needs no installation: download Filee-<version>-win-Portable.zip from the latest release, unzip it and run Filee.exe.

macOS: "Filee can't be opened" / "Apple could not verify…"
The Mac build isn't notarized yet. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway next to the message about Filee.

Checking your download

Every release file is built by this repository's GitHub Actions workflow, and its SHA-256 hash is in Filee-<version>-SHA256SUMS.txt on the release page. To get the hash of the file you downloaded:

  • Windows (PowerShell): Get-FileHash .\Filee-<version>-win-Setup.exe
  • macOS / Linux: shasum -a 256 Filee-<version>-*.tar.gz

If the two match, the file is exactly what was built from the public source code.
