Research direction

Start with the workflow in this issue and related issue #264 to understand how the tutorial videos should follow the per-code walkthroughs. The first video is “Your first calculation with ECCE-QM”; produce it after the current bug-fixing round, with English, Swedish and French subtitles and narration as described. The separate Xvfb screenshot color investigation is also listed, but the issue names no source files or tests.

Written by the indexing model from the issue text.

Description

Short tutorial videos, one task each (3–5 min), made from real screen recordings with a real person's voice. No AI voice or avatar: the videos should show the software as it is used and maintained.

Workflow (decided 2026-10-10)

  1. Script: numbered steps, each with what to click and what to say. Subtitles in English, Swedish and French come from it; translations are checked by a speaker of each language.
  2. Screen recording (OBS, on a real desktop): the steps in order at a normal pace, with no narration and a short pause between steps; a step that goes wrong is simply redone. A real desktop gives the right colours and natural mouse movement.
  3. Voice recording: the script read step by step, with a pause between steps, optionally with the webcam for a picture-in-picture. Narrators: the maintainer (Swedish); English and French narrators to be found.
  4. Editing:
    • match each step in the screen recording to its narration (from the pauses in voice and the changes on screen);
    • trim idle time, speed up long waits (a running calculation at 4–8×, marked), hold the last frame when the sentence is longer;
    • keep the last take of a redone step;
    • add the voice, a picture-in-picture corner (left out where it would cover something), and subtitles as a separate file;
    • the same screen recording can be reused with another language's narration.
  5. Publishing: YouTube (or PeerTube), linked from the help pages, the README and a project website if there is one.

First video: "Your first calculation with ECCE-QM": water, HF/6-31G* single point, its energy and one orbital, nothing else installed. Then for example running ORCA on a cluster, looking at orbitals, and vibrations.

Separate, for the automated screenshots: Builder renders on Xvfb come out with a tint (hydrogens greenish-white, oxygen orange-red, where a real desktop shows white and red). Find the cause (Xvfb colour format, software OpenGL) and check headless renders against a real-desktop screenshot.

Timing: after the current bug-fixing round, so the recorded release behaves well. Related: #264 (per-code walkthroughs, which the videos follow).
