The three stubs are on XarrayPushdownDataset: join(), join_asof() and sort_by() each raise NotImplementedError. Start there, then check how the engine-level join path keeps pushdown intact, so you know which inputs are safe to hand to pyarrow. Done means the three methods delegate to pyarrow's dataset API when the guard passes, and still raise for unsupported cases, with tests for both.

XarrayPushdownDataset stubs join(), join_asof() and sort_by() with NotImplementedError. Engine-level joins already work (register + SQL JOIN in DuckDB/DataFusion, pushdown intact) the stubs only block pyarrow's dataset-level API.
