When the API sends email through an SMTP server and signs in with SMTP_USERNAME and SMTP_PASSWORD, it should start TLS and check the server's certificate (valid for SMTP_HOST, issued by a certificate authority it trusts) before it signs in, as email through SendGrid already does. A relay with a private certificate authority needs a setting that names that authority. Today the SMTP connection differs.
