Research direction

Start with the od utility's argument definitions, next to the existing traditional short flags -h, -H and -X, and find how -B should map to the two-byte octal type (-t o2). Reproduce with printf hello > f; od -B f against od -t o2 f, which should match. Done when -B is accepted, its output matches GNU, and the usage line lists it.

Description

GNU od accepts -B as a traditional short form for octal 2-byte units (-t o2), alongside -h, -H, -X and the others, which uutils already accepts. uutils rejects -B, and its usage line doesn't list it.

Steps to reproduce

$ printf hello > f
$ od -B f
error: unexpected argument '-B' found

  tip: to pass '-B' as a value, use '-- -B'

Usage: od [OPTION]... [--] [FILENAME]...
       od [-abcdDefFhHiIlLoOsxX] [FILENAME] [[+][0x]OFFSET[.][b]]
       ...
$ echo $?
1

GNU behavior

$ od -B f
0000000 062550 066154 000157
0000005
$ echo $?
0

The output is the same as od -t o2 f.

Environment

  • uutils: main @ 1747ba15 (od --version: 0.13.0); also reproduces on the 0.12.0 release
  • GNU coreutils: 9.12, built from source
