Description

Problem

At widths where the avatar is shown, #jim-stage floats over the editor's top-right. The stage holds the avatar, the candidate's own camera (self-view), Audio controls, the turn line and the Live CC captions, and together they cover the right part of the editor.

In the screenshots below, the right end of each long commented line sits under the avatar and the self-view.

Hide avatar does not free the space

disableAvatar() (web/avatar/stage.js:309) stops rendering. After Hide the covered area is the same as before. The self-view and the captions have no hide control at all.

Need

  • Code, "Add a case", "Example drawing" and so on in the editor are not covered.
  • The candidate can still check their own camera or other elements during the interview at the candidate's discretion. So moving the whole stage out of view or hide button is not enough.

Current design

"Placement and pose" in docs/avatar-contract.md places the avatar over the editor rather than in the sidebar, because the candidate glances at it while working. On #131 the placement was left as "a separate design question; if you want it, open a new issue for it once this one is fixed." #244 fixed #131, so this is that issue.

Possible directions

A. A grid column. #jim-stage becomes a third column of .interview-shell. Nothing is covered and the stage still sits beside the editor, but the column takes editor width all the time.

B. Each unit slides off-screen on its own. The stage keeps floating. The avatar, the self-view and the captions can each slide past the right edge, leaving a small arrow that brings them back. The captions' arrow lights up while Jim speaks. Everything starts expanded. This keeps the floating placement and lets the candidate remove only what they do not need at the moment, while the self-view stays one click away.

Which direction fits the project? Or neither?
