Research direction

Start in apps/desktop by locating the file context-menu handler for Open in VS Code and inspect how the selected path is passed to the external editor. Reproduce on Windows with a nested file such as src/discord/events/interactionCreate/user.ts; done means VS Code opens that existing nested file rather than a basename-only unsaved file at the workspace root.

Area

Description

On Windows, Open in VS Code from the file context menu opens an empty, unsaved file named after the file's basename (e.g. user.ts) in the workspace root, instead of opening the existing file at its real nested path. Looks like the file's path relative to the workspace is lost / only the basename is passed to the editor.

Steps to reproduce
  1. Open T3 Code 0.44 on Windows with a project at E:\Programming\open-source\hogwarts-productivity-hub-bot.
  2. Right-click the file src/discord/events/interactionCreate/user.ts.
  3. Select Open in VS Code.
Expected behavior

VS Code opens E:\Programming\open-source\hogwarts-productivity-hub-bot\src\discord\events\interactionCreate\user.ts.

Actual behavior

VS Code opens a new, empty, unsaved file whose path is E:\Programming\open-source\hogwarts-productivity-hub-bot\user.ts (workspace root + basename; the file does not exist there).

Impact

Major degradation: Open in VS Code is unusable for any file not in the project root.

Version and environment
  • T3 Code desktop 0.44 (latest), Windows 11 Home 10.0.26200
  • VS Code as external editor
Notes
  • Opening a file by clicking it in-app works.
  • Possibly related: #11780 (Reveal in File Explorer also fails on Windows); possibly the same path-resolution issue, not verified.
