Research direction

Start by locating the Chat page handler logged as OnAttachClicked and tracing how it opens the native file picker; the issue does not name the source file or test. Reproduce on Windows by clicking the attach button while connected to a gateway, then check whether the picker opens and the selected file is staged without the app exiting. The reporter offers crash dumps or a WER report if needed.

Description

clawsweeper:needs-maintainer-review clawsweeper:no-new-fix-pr impact:crash-loop issue-rating: 🦪 silver shellfish P1
Summary

Clicking the paperclip (attach) button in the chat composer makes the Windows app exit immediately (fail-fast: no error dialog, no managed exception). Still reproducible after upgrading to v2026.9.8-1 (previously reproduced on 2026.9.4.0).

Environment
  • App: OpenClaw Tray / Windows Companion (WinUI) — OpenClaw.Tray.WinUI.exe
  • App version: v2026.9.8-1 (installed via OpenClawCompanion-Setup-x64.exe, release tag v2026.9.8-1)
    • Also reproduced on 2026.9.4.0 (product 2026.9.4+3c43751b)
  • OS: Windows 11 (faulting module ntdll.dll 10.0.26100.9549)
  • Gateway: OpenClaw 2026.9.6 (protocol 4), remote gateway
Steps to reproduce
  1. Open the app's Chat page, connected to a gateway.
  2. Click the paperclip / attach button in the composer.
  3. The whole app exits instantly — no dialog appears.

Reproduced 3/3 times on 2026-09-26 (20:12:35, 20:13:22, 20:30:17 local) and again after updating to v2026.9.8-1 on 2026-10-08.

Expected

The native file picker opens and the selected file is staged in the composer.

Actual

The process dies immediately.

Evidence
  • openclaw-tray.log: the last line before each crash is
    [INFO] [ChatPage] OnAttachClicked invoked
and the next launch logs [ERROR] Previous session did not exit cleanly.
  • Windows Application Error event (identical each time):
faulting module ntdll.dll, exception code 0xc0000409 (fail-fast), faulting offset 0x124406.
  • Crash dumps present: %LOCALAPPDATA%\CrashDumps\OpenClaw.Tray.WinUI.exe..dmp
  • No managed exception is written to the crash log for these crashes → native fail-fast, consistent with opening the file picker without a valid window handle.
Workaround

Pasting (Ctrl+V) or dragging the same file into the window works, and the gateway accepts the attachment — only the paperclip path crashes.

Notes
  • Searched the tracker: no existing issue for this crash (keyword OnAttachClicked → 0 hits). Closest are #1621 / #1644 (attachment handling), which are not crashes.
  • Happy to provide a crash dump / WER report if useful.
