Research direction

The bug is in the usage progress bars of the Codex VS Code extension, which draw bars with Unicode full-block characters (U+2588) inside a span. Start by finding where that bar element and its CSS font-family are defined, and check how the reset-time label is laid out beside it. Reproduce with a CJK monospace font such as Noto Sans Mono CJK TC, where the block glyph is double width. Done means the bars no longer overlap the labels in that font, ideally by drawing the bars with CSS elements as the issue suggests, and the maintainers still need to agree on that approach.

Description

bug extension
What version of the IDE extension are you using?

26.1002.51308

What subscription do you have?

ChatGPT Plus ($20/month)

Which IDE are you using?

Visual Studio Code 1.141.0 (official .deb installation)

What platform is your computer?

Linux 7.0.0-38-generic x86_64 unknown

What issue are you seeing?

The 5-hour and weekly usage progress bars overlap the remaining-percentage and reset-time labels in the Codex VS Code Extension on Kubuntu 26.04 (Traditional Chinese, zh_TW).

The same UI displays correctly on Windows.

I investigated the issue using Chromium DevTools and found that the progress bars are rendered using Unicode block characters.

With Noto Sans Mono CJK TC, the full-block character (█, U+2588) is rendered at twice the width of ordinary ASCII characters.

Canvas measureText() results at 14px:

Character | Noto Sans Mono CJK TC | DejaVu Sans Mono -- | -- | -- Full block (█) | 14.00px | 8.43px Space | 7.00px | 8.43px ASCII A | 7.00px | 8.43px

Changing the progress bar's CSS font-family to DejaVu Sans Mono immediately fixes the layout.

This suggests that the progress bar layout does not account for CJK fonts rendering Unicode block characters at double width.

What steps can reproduce the bug?
  1. Use Kubuntu 26.04 with Traditional Chinese (zh_TW) and Noto Sans Mono CJK TC installed.

  2. Open Visual Studio Code 1.141.0 with the OpenAI Codex Extension (26.1002.51308).

  3. Open the Codex usage/status panel showing the 5-hour and weekly limits.

  4. Observe that the progress bars overlap the remaining-percentage and reset-time labels.

  5. Open Developer Tools and inspect the progress bar's <span> element.

  6. Change its font family in the DevTools Console:

    $0.style.fontFamily = "DejaVu Sans Mono"

  7. Observe that the layout is immediately corrected.

The issue is reproducible with Noto Sans Mono CJK TC, while DejaVu Sans Mono works correctly.

What is the expected behavior?

The 5-hour and weekly usage progress bars should display correctly without overlapping the remaining-percentage or reset-time labels, regardless of the system language or configured font.

The layout should handle Unicode block characters that have different glyph widths in CJK fonts.

Ideally, the progress bars should be rendered using CSS elements rather than relying on Unicode block-character widths.
