Research direction

Start by comparing the display mode enumeration described here with related issue #49, then locate the driver code that reads EDID timings and publishes framebuffer modes. The report gives a clear reproduction and expected result, but names no source files or tests, so finding the relevant subsystem will take project familiarity. Done means the monitor offers 1920x1080 at 60 Hz at minimum, with 144 Hz if supported by the driver.

What happens

Summary

Driver loads and Metal works, but the display is stuck at 1280x1024 @ 75 Hz. The monitor is 1920x1080 @ 144 Hz and its EDID is read correctly, but the driver publishes only 1280x1024 timings (and rasters derived from them). No 1080p mode is offered in System Settings.

This looks like the same enumeration limitation described in #49 (driver inherits the firmware raster and only adds refresh rates at that raster), but here the inherited raster is 1280x1024. Please correct me if this is a different problem.

Environment

  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060, 8 GB (AD106, 10DE:2808, rev a1), PCIe x8 link
  • PC: MSI B760M Gaming Plus WiFi DDR4 (MS-7D99), Intel
  • BIOS: Above 4G Decoding on, Resizable BAR on, CSM off, Secure Boot off
  • macOS 15.8.1, x86_64
  • 1401 Mac / driver package: <version; originally 1401-Mac-1.0.0, updated to / not updated yet>
  • Monitor: MSI G272, 1920x1080 @ 144 Hz, connected via <DisplayPort / HDMI>, port
  • Boot: OpenCore, started from the internal drive (EFI copied from the 1401 stick); behaviour is the same when started from the stick

What I see

  • System Settings > Displays, "Show all resolutions" on: the highest mode is 1280x1024 (default), refresh rate 75 Hz.
  • system_profiler SPDisplaysDataType: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060, Metal 3, VRAM 8 GB, Resolution 1280x1024, UI looks like 1280x1024 @ 75.00Hz.
  • Driver is working: kmutil showloaded lists com.nullmoth.NVRMFB, NVRM, NVRMAGDC, NVAccel; BAR1 8192 MB, VRAM 8188 MB.

Diagnostics

EDID is present in IORegistry (ioreg -lw0 -r -c IODisplay). Decoded base block:

  • DTD 1: 1920x1080 @ 60 Hz (148.5 MHz)
  • DTD 2: 1920x1080 @ 144 Hz (321.79 MHz)
  • Range limits descriptor: 48-144 Hz

ioreg -lw0 -r -c NVRMNVDAFramebuffer:

  • NVRMTiming = 1280x1024, htotal 1688, vtotal 1066, 135 MHz (SXGA 75 Hz)
  • IOFBModes / IOFBDetailedTimings = 30 entries. Only two distinct real timings (135 MHz and 108 MHz, both 1280x1024). All other modes are scaled rasters on top of these.
  • NVRMRefreshModesAdded = 2, NVRMModeSwitches = 1, NVRMDetailedTimings = 30
  • The 1080p60 and 1080p144 timings from the EDID do not appear anywhere.

OpenCore / boot configuration:

  • UEFI > Output > Resolution = Max (also tried 1920x1080@32, no change), ForceResolution = false, GopPassThrough = Disabled
  • Kernel > Block: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport, Strategy Exclude, Enabled; IONDRVFramebuffer instance count is 0
  • boot-args: -v debug=0x100 keepsyms=1 ctrsmt=full amfi_get_out_of_my_way=0x1 amfi=0x80 nvfb=1 nvaccel=1 nvfbheads=4 -nvkmsnosmooth

Warnings printed by the driver while running system_profiler:

nvrm: b80 LOCAL+mapped memory -> system RAM (b79 placement) (BAR1 8192 MB, VRAM 8188 MB, default)
MESA: warning: nvkmd_nvrm_ctx.c:758: VK_ERROR_UNKNOWN
nvrm: copy-engine queue could not be built on this GPU (VkResult -13) - copy queue on a graphics channel
nvrm: b81 SET_LG_SECTOR_PROMOTION 64B rc 0x56

Things I tried (no change)

  • OpenCore Resolution Max and 1920x1080@32
  • Replugging the monitor
  • <other port / cable if tested>

Expected

1920x1080 at 60 Hz at least, ideally up to 144 Hz as declared by the EDID.

Notes

  • The README says the driver is validated on RTX 5060 only, so this may be an RTX 40 / AD106 gap.
  • Related: #49 (modes missing when firmware raster is smaller than the monitor's native mode) and #29 (refresh rates not offered).

Happy to test builds or collect more logs. I have sent / will send logs from the 1401 app: .
