Research direction

Start with the five workflow source files under .github/workflows/ and the dispatcher skill at .github/skills/agentic-workflows/SKILL.md; check the referenced gh-aw documentation and the existing FinOps Toolkit coding guidelines. Validate the compiled workflows with gh aw compile --validate --strict and compare their triggers, permissions, safeguards, and targets with the issue. Done means all five workflows and generated files are present and validation reports zero warnings; the issue describes extensive workflow design and operational setup.

Description

Needs: Triage 🔍

⚠️ Problem

Documentation files across the repository (docs/, docs-mslearn/, docs-wiki/, and README.md) can accumulate broken external HTTP(S) links or drift from recent code changes over time, incoming issues/PRs/comments need automated moderation for spam and low-quality AI-generated content, pull requests benefit from automated diff review against FinOps Toolkit coding standards, and new issues and reproducible bugs benefit from recurring automated triage and small, validated improvement pull requests.

🛠️ Solution

Initialize the repository for GitHub Agentic Workflows (gh-aw) and tailor our initial workflows to the FinOps Toolkit repository:

  • Configure .gitattributes to mark .github/workflows/*.lock.yml as generated (linguist-generated=true).
  • Add the .github/skills/agentic-workflows/SKILL.md dispatcher skill.
  • Add and tailor link-checker (.github/workflows/link-checker.md and .github/workflows/link-checker.lock.yml) to scan docs/, docs-mslearn/, docs-wiki/, and README.md on weekdays, update ms.date for docs-mslearn/**/*.md edits, and open draft pull requests against dev with allowed-files and skip-if-match guards.
  • Add and tailor ai-moderator (.github/workflows/ai-moderator.md and .github/workflows/ai-moderator.lock.yml) with copilot-requests: write, FinOps Toolkit domain context, and noop support to detect spam, link spam, and AI-generated content in issues, comments, and pull requests.
  • Author and compile repo-assist (.github/workflows/repo-assist.md and .github/workflows/repo-assist.lock.yml) to run twice daily (every 12 hours), triage new issues with FinOps Toolkit labels, fix reproducible bugs, and open small draft pull requests against dev with targeted improvements.
  • Add and tailor pr-review (.github/workflows/pr-review.md and .github/workflows/pr-review.lock.yml) to review pull request diffs against docs-wiki/Coding-guidelines.md with target: triggering safe-output protection (manual workflow_dispatch with pr_number runs in analysis-only noop mode).
  • Add and tailor docs-updater (.github/workflows/docs-updater.md and .github/workflows/docs-updater.lock.yml) wired to .claude/skills/microsoft-writing-style-guide/SKILL.md via frontmatter skills: to detect weekly documentation drift and open draft pull requests against dev.
  • Include the compiler-generated .github/workflows/agentics-maintenance.yml and .github/aw/actions-lock.json.

ℹ️ Additional context

  • Initialized and compiled with gh aw version v0.92.0.
  • Validation: gh aw compile --validate --strict succeeded for all 5 workflows with 0 warnings.
  • Sandbox trial runs in MSBrett/gh-aw-trial (--logical-repo microsoft/finops-toolkit):
    • repo-assist (39290826044), link-checker (39291639394), and ai-moderator (39293884505) succeeded across all 6 jobs.
    • pr-review (39325602307) validated job execution, diff analysis on PR #2288, narrow bash allowlist enforcement, and target: triggering rejection of add_comment under workflow_dispatch (noop fallback; live PR comment/review publication requires a pull_request event trigger).
    • docs-updater (39326371162, 39327229538) validated job execution, .claude/skills/microsoft-writing-style-guide skill staging (skill_inventory.json), loading SKILL.md + scripts/validate.py, 7-day merged-PR scanning, and no-change (noop) detection (draft-PR creation and edited-document output were not exercised because recent changes were already documented).
  • Related to #2274 (standalone gh-aw PR review workflow; native Copilot code-review skill remains tracked separately in #2274).
