Start in make-wrappers.py at StandardFileHeader, where the traceback shows os.environ["LOGNAME"] is accessed, and review the make-wrappers.py invocation from the Makefile. Reproduce the build with LOGNAME unset; done means mpiPi_def.h is generated and make completes without the KeyError.

The LOGNAME env variable is not set on this system (actually container). Would be nice if we handle this case.
