Research direction

Start by reading the FieldId newtype introduced in the Transaction V2 action layer and the linked discussion for its intended semantics. Then trace Field.id, Schema, DataFile.fields, and index metadata across lance-core, lance-table, lance-file, and lance-index. Done means those uses adopt FieldId and handle the special values explicitly throughout the crates.

Written by the indexing model from the issue text.

Description

feature

Field ids are a bare i32 across lance-core, lance-table, lance-file and lance-index, and the negative values carry special meanings:

  • -1: no own column
  • -2: tombstoned
  • -3 / -4 / -5: row id / created-at / last-updated lineage columns

Every consumer has to know these conventions.

Transaction V2 (#8644) introduces a FieldId newtype in the action layer with methods like is_schema(), is_tombstone() and lineage_kind(). This issue tracks adopting it crate-wide (Field.id, Schema, DataFile.fields, index metadata), so the special values are handled explicitly everywhere.
