調査の方向性

Start with src/paperpi/plugins/met_no/layouts.py and the test pictures in tests/images/met_no-*; compare them with the v1 sample images on the v1 branch. First make a mockup and resolve the open questions about which layouts to keep, the default layout, and shipping a bold narrow font. Done means the chosen layouts are implemented in src/paperpi/plugins/met_no/, with updated test pictures and plugin README.

Problem

The met_no weather plugin is hard to read from a distance. The v2 layouts should look more like the v1 layouts.

How v1 and v2 differ

v1 had three layouts (sample pictures on the v1 branch, paperpi/plugins/met_no/*-L-sample.png):

  • three_row_icon_wind_temp: three rows (now, +6 h, +12 h). Each row shows date and time, icon, wind arrow and temperature, with a thick line between the rows.
  • three_column_icon_wind_temp_precip: three columns (now, +6 h, +12 h). Each column shows icon, wind, a large temperature, rain and time.
  • two_column_icon_wind_temp_precip: now only. Large icon and wind arrow on the left; max/min and rain in large text on the right.

v2 has six layouts (src/paperpi/plugins/met_no/layouts.py; test pictures in tests/images/met_no-*): hours_12, steps_3h, now, small, portrait_hours, portrait_now.

What makes v2 harder to read:

  • Too many items. hours_12 has 12 columns, each with icon, rain bar, mm, hour, temperature and wind. steps_3h has 4 columns. v1 showed only 3 times.
  • Small text. Each hour's text in hours_12 is only a small part of the screen height. v1 gave each of its 3 rows or columns about a third of the screen, so its numbers were much larger.
  • Thin font. v2 uses the default font, a regular weight. v1 used Economica Bold, a narrow bold font, for times and temperatures. It is easy to read from far away and fits large numbers in a small width.
  • Long summary line. "Max 14°C · Min 8°C · Rain 6.6 mm, 13–17, 19–20" is one long line of small text. In v1, max, min and rain had their own large labels.
  • No lines between rows. v1 used thick lines to separate the rows.

What to do

  1. Pick which v2 layouts to keep, change or replace, using the v1 layouts as the model (few times, large numbers, bold narrow font, lines between rows). Make a mockup first.
  2. Build the new layouts in src/paperpi/plugins/met_no/. Write new code; don't copy v1 code.
  3. Update the test pictures and the plugin README.

Questions to answer first

  • Keep all six v2 layouts, or fewer?
  • Should the default layout change?
  • Is Economica Bold (or another bold narrow font) fine to ship with PaperPi?
