macOS: "Cortex Command.app can't be opened"

TL;DR: The macOS app isn't signed by Apple, so macOS blocks it the first time you open it. Allow it once using either method below.

Option 1: System Settings

  1. Try to open Cortex Command.app, then click Done on the warning.
  2. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security.
  3. Scroll down to the message about "Cortex Command" and click Open Anyway.
  4. Confirm, and enter your password if asked.

Option 2: Terminal

Run this command, replacing the path with wherever you put the app:

xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine "/path/to/Cortex Command.app"

For example, if it's in your Downloads folder:

xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine ~/Downloads/"Cortex Command.app"

Tip: type xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine (with a trailing space), then drag the app from Finder into the Terminal window to fill in the path.

You only need to do this once.
