#10269 moves the OpenSSL override in vcpkg.json from 3.0.8 to 3.6.4#1. That is the OpenSSL the Linux DEBs and the macOS package bundle. 3.6.4 was the only version in the vcpkg registry with no published advisory, but OpenSSL supports the 3.6 series only until 2026-11-01 (per the release strategy). After that date, no fixes arrive for the version OpenMS ships.
Options, as of 2026-09-25:
- OpenSSL 4.0, supported until 2027-05-14, once vcpkg packages it. The registry's newest port is 3.6.4#1.
- OpenSSL 3.5, the LTS series, supported until 2030-04-08, at 3.5.7 or later. vcpkg's newest 3.5 is 3.5.4, which has CVE-2025-15467 and CVE-2026-45447 (both High), so this would need an overlay port in
vcpkg-overlays/ports/openssl.
Watch for the Python clash described in #10269 and in the #9800 review (discussion_r3767190690). It only matters if pyOpenMS is ever built against the vcpkg libraries on Linux without renaming them. The wheels are not affected, because auditwheel gives the bundled OpenSSL its own SONAME.

python3 scripts/bundled-libs.pyin openms-test-lab lists the OpenSSL that each package bundles and its advisories from openssl-library.org.- Check F6 of the release-readiness runbook does the same.
