Add a visual progress indicator, such as a bar or a ring around the digits, that shrinks as the countdown runs. Settle the design (bar or circular) with maintainers first, since the issue leaves it open. Done when the indicator tracks the remaining time on screen.

Feature description
When using timers with people that can't read (e.g. children) they can't properly tell how much time is left on the timer, and that's really useful to make them realize time passing.
A simple visualization, like a progress bar, can be quite effective to fill this gap

Additional information
If I remember correctly, I've seen other apps use a "circular progress bar" around the digits of time left
