Direzione di ricerca

This is an open design exploration, not a bounded change: it asks how multi-view HEVC/AV2 support should be detected, configured, and represented as frames, and how it would interact with the video element, canvas and WebXR layers. Start by reading the existing WebCodecs spec sections on codec configuration and VideoFrame, and the WebXR layers module it references. Done would be a proposal the working group can discuss, not a patch.

Descrizione

TPAC2026

Multi-view coding is supported in MV-HEVC and is being worked on as part of AV.2.
WebXR already has stereo concepts in the layers module (XRLayerLayout values stereo-left-right, stereo-top-bottom) to allow rendering textures as stereo.
Some platform encoders/decoders (at least VideoToolbox) already support MV-HEVC.

Web pages cannot really leverage that support via WebCodecs (other than decoding independent or stitched streams).

There are a few aspects that are worth exploring in that area:

  1. How to detect support of multi view HEVC/AV2? How to configure that support on encoders/decoders?
  2. What should consume/produce these encoders/decoders: a special VideoFrame, a group of VideoFrames, something else...?
  3. Interaction with producers/consumers of such frames: video element, canvas, webxr.
