Direzione di ricerca

The required and optional records and their definitions are listed in the issue body, but it names no files, so first find the tool and the custom domains page in the repository. Decide how a record gets flagged as optional and where the plain-language explanations go, since the issue asks for both. Done means each optional record in the list is marked and explained on the page, and the required records are unchanged.

Descrizione

Not all DNS records need to be published for the domain to be verified, or for it to send mail. The tool (and custom domains page) should flag if a record is optional. Since some of our users are less technical, we should think about explaining what these records are for as well.

Required Records:

  • MX
  • CNAME / tm1._domainkey
  • CNAME / tm2._domainkey
  • CNAME / tm3._domainkey

Optional Records:

  • _jmap._tcp
  • _caldavs._tcp
  • _carddavs._tcp
  • _imaps_tcp
  • _submission._tcp
  • SPF (technically optional as this is not required for the domain to verify within the portal, but lack of it may cause delivery issues)
  • _mta-sts
  • _smtp._tls
  • _dmarc (technically optional as this DMARC policy isn't doing anything, but lack of it may cause delivery issues)

Record Definitions:

  • MX: directs incoming email sent to the domain to the correct receiving mail server
  • _jmap._tcp: points clients to the host and post for JMAP; used for synchronizing mail, calendars, and contacts
  • _caldavs._tcp: enables automatic configuration for CalDav over SSL/TLS; used by mail/calendar apps to synchronize calendars and events
  • _carddavs._tcp: enables automatic configuration for CardDav over SSL/TLS; used by mail/address book apps to synchronize address books and contacts.
  • _imaps_tcp: points email clients to a secure IMAP over SSL/TLS server to retrieve incoming messages
  • _submission._tcp: points email clients to an authenticated SMTP message submission server for sending outbound messages
  • SPF: defines an authorized list of senders for the domain to prevent bad actors from spoofing the sender identity
  • _mta-sts: signals to external mail servers that the domain requires TLS encryption for inbound mail delivery; works in conjunction with a policy hosted on an external web server
  • _smtp._tls: configures recipient addresses to receive automated diagnostic reports from external MTAs regarding connection issues or MTA-STS policy failures:
  • _dmarc: establishes a policy instructing receiving mail servers how to treat messages that fail SPF and DKIM alignment, and defines reporting mailboxes for receiving feedback
  • tm1._domainkey: for DKIM, specifically the rsa-sha256 encryption algorithm. DKIM helps prove that messages weren't altered on the way to their destination.
  • tm2._domainkey: for DKIM, specifically the ed25519-sha256 encryption algorithm.
  • tm3._domainkey: for DKIM, reserved for future use (I believe at least)
