Problem

A client booting without network ends up in "remote control mode" instead of starting the GUI from the cache, although the cache partition holds start.conf and the GUI archive.

Cause

Without a server, the cache device is not known yet (/conf/linbo is only written from a downloaded start.conf). findcache() in linbo_mountcache then looks for it only via /dev/disk/by-id/*part*. Disks without by-id links are not found:

  • virtio disks without a serial (libvirt <serial> unset)
  • some eMMC and USB devices

linbo_mountcache prints its usage and fails, so copyfromcache start.conf fails, no start.conf and no GUI are available, and LINBO shows the remote control message.

In the online case this stays unnoticed because the cache device comes from the downloaded start.conf; the early linbo_mountcache call during init only prints its usage.

Reproduction / verification

Test VM with a virtio disk vda without serial, 7.4.19: /dev/disk/by-id/ holds only the DVD drive, the vda partitions only show up in by-path and /proc/partitions. Booting without link ends in remote control mode (watched via console screenshots). After adding <serial> to the disk, the same offline boot starts the GUI from the cache.

Not related to #187: the DHCP request just times out normally here.

Proposed fix

Keep the by-id search and add a fallback over the partitions known to the kernel (/sys/class/block/*/partition), using the same check (mountable and contains linbo64).
