Start by reading network() in init.sh and the existing netwait change referenced as issue #167. Check how it detects interfaces and how the wpa_supplicant branch is reached; the issue leaves the wait trigger undecided and notes that PCI detection does not cover USB WLAN sticks. Done means agreeing on that behavior and ensuring a late wlan0 is considered when WLAN is configured, without an unnecessary wait when no supported WLAN hardware is present.

Problem

A WLAN card whose driver registers wlan0 late is missed by network() in init.sh when the machine also has a wired interface. Forum report (MediaTek mt7921e, Linbo 4.3): https://ask.linuxmuster.net/t/mediatek-wlan-problem-unter-linbo-4-3/12394

The reporter removed his sleep 1 hook and set netwait=20: the WLAN card was not found at boot. eth0 exists on this machine.

Cause

The netwait wait (#167) only blocks while no non-loopback interface exists in /proc/net/dev. As soon as eth0 is there, the wait ends and the interface list is taken. A wlan0 that appears a little later is missing from that list, so LINBO never tries it, and the existing wpa_supplicant branch is not reached.

Data from the report: ls /sys/class/net afterwards shows eth0 lo wlan0, driver mt7921e at 0000:02:00.0, PCI class 0x028000. The dmesg lines had no timestamps, so the actual delay of wlan0 is not known yet.

Proposal

If /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf exists (WLAN is configured) and no wlan* interface is present yet, also wait up to netwait seconds for wlan0. To avoid a pointless delay on machines without WLAN hardware, only do this if a PCI device of class 0x0280xx exists. USB WLAN sticks cannot be detected this way and keep the old behaviour (wait only if no interface at all).

Open points to decide:

  • automatic as above, or an explicit kernel parameter (the reporter suggests a waitwlan option)
  • the DHCP attempt on a wired interface without link costs time before wlan0 is tried; skipping interfaces without carrier is possible but the carrier can take a few seconds to come up, so it is not part of this proposal

Applies to 7.4 and 4.3 (same network() loop).
