Direzione di ricerca

This is a design issue about scheduling a GitHub Actions workflow that pulls kernel mailing-list patches with lei and opens pull requests for kmod patches. The body says the work depends on first deciding how to tell kernel patches from kmod patches, and #52 is referenced as prerequisite. Nothing in the payload names a file or test to start from, so the first step is to resolve that open question with maintainers, not to write code.

Descrizione

enhancement

On top of #52 , another improvement is to automate that in github CI, so the import is automatic.

This depends however on checking if the patch is for the kernel or kmod, since currently the mailing list is shared by both. Once this is figured out, I think the following could work:

  • Use lei to download all the patches since a certain date/msgid
  • processes the emails checking for root messages. Trigger the PR creation if it matches the criteria: it's a patch to kmod and there was no import done yet. Optional: parse human replies (from specific people) like "/kmod-bot test this" in the mailing list to force the import
  • save the last checked info (automatically saved by lei) to a file, and commit it to a branch like ml-import to maintain state... another option is to use github-action's cache, with the downside that if the cache is invalidated it would process all the emails again, which is not what we want
