From the audit of ZOrbit 0.11.0 (31 October 2026). Decided: accept the limitation and state it.

Installing or removing the ZScript plugin in a ZBrush under Program Files runs ShellExecuteEx with the runas verb on sys.executable, which is the per-user %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\ZOrbit\ZOrbit.exe (the installer is PrivilegesRequired=lowest). The elevated helper does ignore the staging folder and builds the plugin from the bundled .zsc, but that .zsc, python312.dll and every DLL in _internal sit in the same user-writable folder, and _make_shortcut starts a bare powershell.exe. Anything already running as the user can swap the exe and wait for the user to press Install. Nothing in the code can change that while the app installs per user and never asks for administrator rights itself.

docs/bridge.md:50 says the opposite: "builds the plugin files from the installation's own copies, so nothing from a user-writable folder is copied with administrator rights."

Fix

  • docs/bridge.md:50: "The elevated step ignores the staging folder and builds the plugin files itself, but it is ZOrbit's own program running from your user folder, so approve the prompt only on a PC you trust."
  • SECURITY.md: a known-limitations paragraph with the reason.
  • docs/install.md:33 ("A ZBrush under Program Files asks for administrator rights once"): one clause on what the prompt elevates.
