Implement the proposed nullable sequence_suffix approach for the six listed objects. Done means B 44a, B 67a, B 83a, B 84a, B 117a, and B 119a load as separate catalogue entries, retain their positions and diameters, and can be found when searching for their base numbers.

The Barnard loader skips six objects of the catalogue: B 44a, B 67a, B 83a, B 84a, B 117a and B 119a.

The sequence of a catalog object is an integer, so "44a" has no place.

Facts

  • astro_data/barnard/barnard.dat (VizieR VII/220A) has 349 rows: 343 numbers and these 6 "a" objects. The database has 343 Barnard objects.
  • The other gaps in B 1 to B 370 are correct. B 176 to B 200 never existed. B 52, B 131a and B 172 are duplicates in Barnard's own list. The VizieR ReadMe says this.
  • The six objects are separate dark nebulae. Each has its own position and diameter. For example, B 44a is at 16h 44m 45s, -40° 20'.

Options

  1. A nullable sequence_suffix text column in catalog_objects. The name becomes "B 44a". A keypad search for 44 shows B 44 and B 44a.
  2. Put each "a" object in the database as a new object with the name "B 44a" as an aka name, with no sequence of its own. This needs no schema change, but the keypad cannot find it.
  3. Keep them out, and add the "a" object only to the notes of the base object.

Option 1 is the cleanest. It also helps other catalogues with letter suffixes later.
