Descrizione

bug

Reported on Cloudy Nights (thread 914101, comment 14873609, v2 hardware on 2.6.3): the SQM screen showed 22.08 with no Bortle class, and the reading appeared frozen until a power cycle.

Cause (v2.6.3, python/PiFinder/ui/sqm.py)

get_sky_details() covers 0.00 to 22.00 mag/arcsec². The darkest band is Bortle 1 at (21.76, 22.00), and anything above 22.00 returns None.

When details is None, update() draws the value and units and then returns early. That path skips:

  • the "Ns ago" / "Nm ago" age line
  • star count and exposure
  • CAL / !CAL
  • the altitude-corrected value
  • the Bortle line and the SQUARE DETAILS legend (SQUARE has no description to show)

Why it looks like a freeze

The SQM producers in solver.py don't use the Bortle table, so a value above 22.00 is published and re-read every frame like any other. The UI doesn't hang. But without the age line, the user can't tell a live reading from a stale one. If the radiometer stops publishing (accumulator.estimate() returns None), the screen keeps showing the last value with nothing to say it is old. On an in-range value, the climbing "Nm ago" would have shown it.

So the missing Bortle class explains why the staleness was invisible. It does not explain why the value stopped updating, if it did. A value that kept re-publishing at about 22.08 would look the same.

Fix

  • Treat anything above 22.00 as Bortle 1 (open-ended top band), and below 0 as Bortle 9.
  • Don't return early when there are no details. Draw the age, stars, exposure and calibration rows regardless, and skip only the Bortle line.

Related, still open

  • A second "frozen SQM screen" report on rev4, 2026-09-16, value within range.
  • Jon Isaacs, same thread (14873285): "NO SQM DATA" that persisted through a reboot, which means sqm().last_update was never set since boot. That is a producer-side question that this UI bug doesn't touch.
