Direzione di ricerca

Start by reviewing the existing Coordinator–Tablet Server communication paths. Define common request, response, timeout, retry, error-handling, idempotency, and acknowledgement semantics, then identify follow-up migration work. Done means the behavior is consistently specified across normal execution, retries, failover, and recovery, with relevant metrics, logs, and tests addressed.

Motivation

Description

The Coordinator Server and Tablet Servers currently use several communication patterns with different semantics for request handling, error propagation, retries, timeouts, and state synchronization. These inconsistencies make interactions harder to reason about and may lead to ambiguous outcomes, duplicated operations, stale state, or delayed recovery when failures occur.

This parent issue aims to establish consistent communication semantics between the Coordinator Server and Tablet Servers.

Motivation

Improving consistency is important because:

  • Predictable failure handling: Similar requests should follow the same rules for retries, timeouts, and exception propagation.
  • Unambiguous operation results: Callers should be able to determine whether an operation succeeded, failed, or has an unknown outcome.
  • Safer retries: Consistent idempotency guarantees help prevent duplicated operations and state corruption.
  • Reliable state synchronization: Both sides should maintain a consistent view of metadata, assignments, and server status.
  • Simpler maintenance: Unified patterns reduce implementation complexity and make future communication changes safer.
  • Better observability: Standardized errors and lifecycle states make production issues easier to diagnose.

Scope

This issue tracks work to:

  • Review existing Coordinator–Tablet Server communication paths.
  • Define common request, response, timeout, retry, and error-handling semantics.
  • Clarify idempotency and acknowledgement guarantees.
  • Standardize handling of disconnections, stale requests, and partial failures.
  • Improve relevant metrics, logs, and tests.
  • Migrate existing RPC interactions through follow-up issues.

Expected Outcome

Coordinator–Tablet Server interactions should provide consistent and well-defined behavior across normal execution, retries, failover, and recovery. This will improve system correctness, resilience, debuggability, and long-term maintainability.
