Direzione di ricerca

Start by reading the existing Backups page and how it invokes Timeshift; the issue does not name the files or tests. Define the personal backup tool, target selection, reminders, restore test, and encryption behavior before implementation. Done means the page clearly distinguishes system restore points from personal backups and supports the requested backup and restore flows.

Problem
Backups (Timeshift restore points) only cover system files – the Backups window says so itself ("system files only, not your personal files"), and restoring keeps /home as it is. A beginner can easily think "I have backups" and still lose documents and photos when the disk dies.

Idea: two clearly separated parts on the Backups page

  • System (exists today): restore points, also before updates.
  • Personal files (new): back up Documents, Pictures, Downloads … and chosen folders to an external drive (or another disk).

What it needs

  • Date of the last backup and free space on the target, visible on the page.
  • A gentle reminder if there is no personal backup (or it is old) – no always-running service, e.g. checked at login.
  • A guided "Test a restore": restore one file to a temporary folder, so the user sees that it works.
  • Plain words: what is protected by what.

To decide: tool underneath (rsync with hard links like Timeshift, Déjà Dup, or Pika Backup from Flathub), encryption for external drives.
