People switching from Windows double-click a .exe they downloaded – and today nothing useful happens. Bottles is already in the Software Store ("Run Windows programs") and Steam with Proton comes from the Setup Wizard, but users don't find that on their own.

Plan (small, honest – not a "Windows app store")

  1. Double-click on a .exe / .msi opens a small window: "This is a Windows program. Simple OS can try to run it with Bottles."

    • Bottles installed → open the file in Bottles.
    • Not installed → offer to install it from the Software Store (Flathub), then open the file.
    • Also offered in the file manager's right-click menu.

  2. Help page "Windows programs on Simple OS" (Menu → Help), in plain words:

    • what usually works (many older programs, lots of games through Steam/Proton),
    • what usually doesn't (Microsoft 365, current Adobe apps, games with kernel anti-cheat),
    • good alternatives (LibreOffice, GIMP/Krita, Office in the browser …).

  3. Steam hint: where Steam's own switch "Enable Steam Play for all other titles" is. Simple OS doesn't change Steam's settings behind the user's back.

  4. Optional component in the Setup Wizard: "SOS Bridge" – a page Optional Components with one checkbox, off by default:

    Run many Windows 10 and Windows 11 programs on Simple OS. Powered by Bottles and Wine, it installs and runs compatible Windows software without a separate Windows installation.

    Additional downloads required. You can install it later from the Software Store.

    • Ticked → Bottles is installed from Flathub at the end of the wizard (needs internet; skipped with a note when offline), and the .exe/.msi handling from point 1 is ready at once.
    • Not ticked → nothing is downloaded; the same component can be installed later from the Software Store, and point 1 still offers it on the first double-click.
    • "SOS Bridge" is only the name of this bundle (Bottles + the .exe handling + the help page), not our own Windows layer. "Windows" stays out of the name on purpose (Microsoft trademark, and it would promise more than Bottles/Wine can keep); it appears only in the describing text. The text says "many", never "all" – the help page from point 2 is linked right there.

Not planned: automatic Windows VMs (needs a Windows licence, many GB, lots of RAM), bundling CrossOver (commercial), or maintaining our own configs for popular Windows apps – Bottles/Lutris do that much better.
