Research direction

Start with the “Choosing an entry point” section of the linked GitHub Copilot in IDEs article, then read the supplied canonical VS Code references, especially the overview and Agents window pages. Add a VS Code-specific subsection covering the requested entry points, session types, shared management and customization links, and ensure the generic overview does not contradict it.

What article on docs.github.com is affected?

https://docs.github.com/en/copilot/concepts/copilot-surfaces/copilot-in-ides

What part(s) of the article would you like to see updated?

The article presents a generic IDE model that no longer reflects how VS Code positions and exposes AI agents. In particular, this statement is too broad:

Agentic changes are made in your local development environment.

VS Code now supports agent sessions that run locally, in the background, or in the cloud. It also provides an Agents window for managing multiple sessions across projects, supports session handoff, and distinguishes the shared VS Code experience from agent harnesses such as GitHub Copilot, Anthropic Claude, and OpenAI Codex.

Please add a VS Code-specific subsection under Choosing an entry point (similar to the existing JetBrains subsection) that:

  • describes Chat and the Agents window as the main VS Code entry points
  • distinguishes local, background, and cloud sessions instead of implying all agent work is local
  • explains that VS Code can host multiple agent harnesses while providing shared session management and change review
  • briefly points readers to current customization options such as models/BYOK, MCP servers, agent skills, and plugins
  • links to the canonical VS Code documentation rather than duplicating implementation details that will change quickly

The generic cross-IDE overview can remain concise, but its claims should not contradict the current VS Code experience.

Additional information

Canonical VS Code references:

The VS Code overview currently leads with handing off tasks to agents, managing sessions across local/background/cloud environments, choosing among agent harnesses, and reviewing changes in one shared experience. Aligning this page with that framing would give readers an accurate picture of Copilot and agents in VS Code without turning the article into a full VS Code feature inventory.
