Research direction

Update docs/platforms/dotnet/guides/azure-functions-worker/index.mdx. Compare its package setup and tracing configuration with the Sentry.Samples.OpenTelemetry.AzureFunctions sample on main, then check the .NET OTLP page for the link and details. Replace the obsolete setup and revise the performance tracing sentence; done when the guide matches the sample and no longer recommends the obsolete methods.

Description

.NET Azure Functions Docs OpenTelemetry

The Azure Functions (isolated worker) guide sets up tracing with the Sentry.OpenTelemetry package, TracerProviderBuilder.AddSentry() and SentryOptions.UseOpenTelemetry(). #5586 made those span-processor setup methods obsolete in 6.12.0, in favour of the OTLP exporter added in 6.5.0 (#4899). So a user who follows the guide today gets obsolete warnings.

The Sentry.Samples.OpenTelemetry.AzureFunctions sample on main already uses the OTLP exporter: AddSentryOtlpExporter(dsn) on the tracer provider and options.UseOtlp() on the Sentry options. The guide should match it.

This is accurate for 6.x, so it can merge now.

Page to update in getsentry/sentry-docs

docs/platforms/dotnet/guides/azure-functions-worker/index.mdx:

  • Install Sentry.OpenTelemetry.Exporter instead of Sentry.OpenTelemetry, and check which of the other OpenTelemetry packages the sample still needs.
  • Replace AddSentry() / UseOpenTelemetry() with AddSentryOtlpExporter(dsn) / UseOtlp(), as the sample does, and link to the .NET OTLP page for the details.
  • Update the sentence "Performance tracing can be enabled by adding Sentry to the OpenTelemetry TracerProviderBuilder and then configuring Sentry itself to use OpenTelemetry."

getsentry/sentry-docs#19925 (merges at 7.0.0 GA) also edits this page, moving the Sentry options from logging.AddSentry(...) into SentrySdk.Init. Expect a small conflict there when it merges master.
