Research direction

Read build.yml and compare its macOS compositor jobs with the Rust installation step in ci.yml. The failure is in Build Metal compositor addon when it runs npm run build:native:compositor:mac; check that the toolchain is available on both macOS runners. Done when the arm64 DMG workflow completes successfully, with the x64 job covered as well.

Description

build.yml's macOS arm64 DMG job fails on main @ 5d82a0cb2: the runner image no longer ships Rust, and the job never installs it.

Run: https://github.com/getopenscreen/openscreen/actions/runs/40772284800 (workflow_dispatch on main)

Failing step: Build Metal compositor addon → npm run build:native:compositor:mac

Error: cargo not found at /Users/runner/.cargo/bin/cargo. Install Rust (https://rustup.rs) first.

Runner image: macos-26-arm64 20261021.0445.8 (macos-latest). The last green arm64 build (run 39270054626, 19/10) ran on an older image that still had ~/.cargo/bin/cargo. The cargo cache step restores fine, but restores no toolchain.

Why it matters: prerelease.yml dispatches this same workflow, so the next RC cannot produce an Apple Silicon DMG.

Likely fix: the Install Rust toolchain step ci.yml already runs before its macOS compositor jobs (rustup with --target aarch64-apple-darwin), added to the macOS job of build.yml. The x64 job runs on macos-15-intel and may still have Rust preinstalled; worth installing it there too so the next image bump doesn't break it.

Found during the macOS e2e pass for #1422.
