Reproduce with the given printf | xargs -x -s11 case and compare GNU vs uutils. Locate the xargs argument-batching and -x (exit if the command line is too long) path in this findutils crate; the bug is running a pending command before rejecting an oversized argument. Done is matching GNU: print nothing, report the too-long error, exit 1. The reporter already has a fix and plans a PR, so do not start unless that work is abandoned.

$ printf 'ab cdefghijkl' | xargs -x -s11; echo $?
GNU prints nothing, reports xargs: argument line too long, and exits 1. uutils prints ab, reports Error: Argument too large, and exits 1. Without -x, both print ab before reporting the error.
I have a fix ready and will open the PR soon.
