feedback simulation workshop
Problem statement

07-your-first-workflow.md / 07d-confirm-model-access.md is now the highest-conditional-dropout step overall (20.52% among 22,472 at-risk runs) after correcting a simulator content-mapping defect that had previously masked this step's real failure driver. failureCategoriesByStep shows copilot-access-missing (4,065 failures) as the dominant cause — learners whose GitHub account/org has no usable Copilot access get stuck at the mandatory pre-flight check, and 3,844 of these are specifically tagged in the model's 07-first-workflow transition as blocking the required model-access activity. The current pre-flight check (run gh copilot, send a test prompt) correctly detects the problem but offers only a single link to 07d-confirm-model-access.md and github.com/settings/copilot for recovery — there is no explicit guidance for a learner whose organization has never enabled Copilot for Actions at all versus one who simply lacks a personal license.

Proposed change

Expand the [!IMPORTANT] callout in 07-your-first-workflow.md (and the parallel callout in 07d-confirm-model-access.md) to branch into two concrete remediation paths before sending the learner onward: (1) "no Copilot license at all" → link to obtaining/requesting a license, and (2) "license exists but org centralized billing for Actions is not enabled" → link directly to the relevant billing side quest section. This keeps the existing test-prompt pre-flight check intact and adds a decision branch rather than removing any instructions.

Failure mode classification

Access barrier — this is an environment/licensing/authentication gap, not a conceptual or scaffolding weakness. active_learning (6.3/10) and general instructional quality for this step are already comparatively strong.

Quantitative guardrail

Current scores for 07-your-first-workflow.md / 07d-confirm-model-access.md:

  • overall_score: 6.25/10
  • Weakest rubric dimension: checkpoint_quality (0.0/10)
  • Learning KPI index: (2.0 × 6.3 + 2.0 × 0.0 + 1.5 × 5.0) / 5.5 = 3.94/10

Because this is an access-barrier fix (clearer branching recovery guidance, not new concepts or removed practice), it should not lower active_learning or scaffolding; the added decision branch can only raise troubleshootingSupport/checkpoint_quality-adjacent content, so overall_score and the learning KPI index should stay flat or improve while conditional dropout at this step decreases.

Acceptance criteria
  • The shared curriculum quantitative assessment overall_score for 07-your-first-workflow.md stays flat or improves after the change
  • The step's learning KPI index ((2.0 × active_learning + 2.0 × checkpoint_quality + 1.5 × scaffolding) / 5.5) stays flat or improves
  • The existing test-prompt pre-flight check and full workflow-authoring activity are preserved unchanged, not simplified or removed
  • The new branch clearly distinguishes "no Copilot license" from "org billing not enabled" and links each to its correct remediation resource
