The issue raises open design questions about gamut limits, preserving chroma or lightness when hue changes, and mapping perceptual color spaces to area pickers; first agree on the API and behavior with the maintainers. Hey folks, I'm working on a design application and I'm planning on working on UI based on the React Aria color-related components that would add support for color spaces like oklab, oklch.
It's a gnarly problem space, some problems I've been thinking about:
- Area pickers need to signal out of bounds color selection that your monitor doesn't support.
- Do you want to maintain chroma or lightness when changing hue? How do you choose which one?
- How do we map the color space to a rectangle for area picking?
I'm not an expert in the field, but I wanted to signal my intent here in case anyone is working on something similar. Ideally I would love for us to collaborate and come up with a great API we can all use for our color pickers.
